Widow Skimmer 0394

Widow Skimmer Dragonflies - (Libellula luctuosa) have the basal half of their wings black. Males, like this one, also have a wide white bar which they constantly flash as they make frequent, slow, fluttery patrols across the water and the nearby vegetation. They get their name because, unlike other dragonflies, the male does not stay with the female after copulation.
