Long-billed Hermit 4493

The Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy) lives in the undergrowth of the forest, usually near water and its favorite flowers. The adult Green Hermit is mainly dark green above with a blue-green rump. It has a long, curved beak and a long tail. It wears a dark mask with buff stripes above and bellow the eye. Males form leks which are groups of 10 -25 hummingbirds who sing together and wiggle their tails to attract females. Green Hermits do not defend territory, but visit and pollinate flowers on routes through the forest up to 1 km long.
